SAFC Lives presents personnel profiles where we talk to the people and personalities who make SAFC tick to find out more about their position, what drives them and what they enjoy doing when they’re not playing a critical role in the ongoing growth of SAFC.
In this edition, we talk with Patrick Klipstine, Global Director of Project Management, in Madison, WI.
SAFC is onsite in Frankfurt, Germany ready to attend CPhI Worldwide this week from October 22nd to 24th. The team will be available in booth 51B36 to network with the industry and is offering up the chance to win an Apple® iPad® just for visiting the booth and answering questions about SAFC contract manufacturing services and solutions! To learn more about SAFC’s time at CPhI Worldwide 2013, click here.
While in Frankfurt, Dr. Andreas Weiler, Global Head of Strategic Marketing at SAFC will offer a look into the future of the Western CMO during a CPhI Speaker’s Corner (Tuesday, October 22nd) at 4:30pm. His talk will address the increasing trend to outsource non-core activities to countries that offer perceived cost advantages in terms of low-cost labor, cheaper raw materials and flexibility in terms of production volume. In it, Dr. Weiler will uncover how to bridge these gaps with a robust, customer intimate strategy that is focused on specialized technologies and services.

Just over a month ago, SAFC Live highlighted the upcoming digital integration of SAFC and SAFC Hitech into the website of parent company Sigma-Aldrich. And as promised, we were here on SAFC Live to celebrate the launch of www.sigma-aldrich.com/safc and www.sigma-aldrich.com/safchitech. Now that the launch is complete, we thought it was a good time to sit down again with Deborah (Deb) Slagle, vice president of SAFC Marketing and R&D; Cathy Danahy, Marketing Operations, Sigma-Aldrich; and Elizabeth (Liz) Grach, supervisor of SAFC Marketing Communications and discuss how SAFC refined their web experience to follow the customer’s journey. (more…)

Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) recently featured an article titled, “Exploiting Cells’ Electrical Behavior”. In it, key industry figures look into available methods to track and analyze the behavior of cells, including density and viability, and other raw materials used in bioprocessing applications.
In the second half of the article, Principal Scientist and PhD, Chandana Sharma offers insight into SAFC’s own Raw Material Characterization (RMC) program that seeks to screen raw materials analytically and biologically. It uses rapid near-infrared (NIR) and Raman sensing devices that allow investigators to employ multivariate analysis to uncover spectral properties that correlate with quality attributes in culture medium.
The fast and noninvasive method can be applied to incoming raw materials as well as finished products. To read the full article, click here and let us know about your experience with multivariate analysis in the comments section.

The team is having a great time onsite at BPI 2013 in Boston. We invite you to join us tomorrow (9/19) at noon EST in Room 209 for a Technology Workshop on “Viral Risk Mitigation Strategies for Cell Culture Raw Materials and Manufacturing Processes”. If you cannot make it to the workshop, we welcome the chance to talk at Booth 301, and don’t forget about our Scavenger Hunt to win an Amazon Kindle® (winner to be announced at close of show).
